The Nugget Library Hamilton's contribution to the Nugget Library was minimal - only two stories in 508 issues and both reprints from the Union Jack. However the Nugget Library is an interesting publication and merits a section of it's own. The first series was published by James Henderson and ran from October 1905 to December 1907, a total of 108 issues. Very little is known of this publication - it didn't even merit a mention in the Lofts and Adley Old Boys Books Catalogue. The Second (New) series ran from 1908-1916, a total of 330 issues, before becoming yet another casualty of the War time paper shortage. Again this is a relatively rare publication but a few issues do crop up for sale from time to time. The third series of the Nugget Library (better known as the 3d Nugget Library) ran from May 1919 to March 1922, a total of 70 issues and was initially published by James Henderson before being taken over by the Amalgamated Press. In the Henderson era most of the stories were by S.H. Agnew and Lucas Reed but after the takeover (issue 3/20) more familiar names from the AP stable of writers started to appear. Nelson Lee was well represented in the latter issues with no less than 26 stories appearing in the 3d Nugget library . The Nelson Lee (detective) and Nelson Lee (St Frank's) stories were both published on the 15th of the month and advertise themselves as "Companion Volumes". The St Frank's tales were reprinted from the Boys' Realm and many of the stories are by substitute authors and not by E. S. Brooks. The Detective stories claim to be original. The following table has been pulled together from a number of sources but the majority of the data is taken from the following- The Nelson Lee listings are based on The Nelson Lee Library and Bibliography of the writings of E. S. Brooks by Robert C. Blythe, revised by Mark Caldicott 1995. You can find Mark's website here The remainder of the story titles for the 3d library are from an article by Robert Blythe based on the research of Jack Murtagh and was published in the Collectors Digest Issue 56. The 3d Nugget Library merged with the Boys Friend Library after 70 issues. |
