The
Story Paper Collector
Bill Gander was born in Croydon in
1898 and moved to Canada with his parents when he was thirteen. As a keen
collector of story papers Bill bought a tabletop press to be used for sending
out lists of his requirements to other collectors. In 1941 he started publishing
a small magazine containing stories about the story papers and their authors
which he sent free to other collectors.
This magazine, the Story Paper Collector was the
fore runner of the Collectors Digest and was incorporated into the CD when Bill
Gander died in 1966. Bill was plagued by ill health for many years and had
decided that issue 100 would be the last but unfortunately he passed away
suddenly after the publication of issue 95. You can read an obituary from an
unidentified Canadian newspaper
here.
Four volumes of the Story Paper Collectors were
published. The plan was for each volume to contain 25 issues but due to Bill's
death in 1966 the final volume was limited to 20 issues. No contents list or
index were published for volume 4.
Individual issues can be viewed or downloaded from
the links below. If you prefer you can download a RAR file containing all the
issues here.
